Day -0 for Fedora 16 Release Event in San Jose (Costa Rica)

I was invited to spend the morning in the Legislative Parliament of Costa Rica. They have a presentation for middle management about free-software. The parliament is going to migrate and the want to kill all myth before rumors start. Carolina Flores has been working on free-software diffusion very successfully, recently introducing to small enterprises. She made a very nice introduction for non-technical people. Alonzo Castro from the Universidad de Costa Rica gave a talk about the migration process on the University. He explained very well how a migration can be a very ordered and conscious process, looking for the opportunities where free-software will yield best results and not pushing in areas where it will not worth the effort. Last come Oscar Retana with a example of large scale free-software deployment on bank institutions coexisting with very specific proprietary software showing that now in Costa Rica there are business that can provide support for institutions looking ti migrate to free-software. The president of the parliament showed up to stress the importance of this meeting, and just as casual I was standing there to shake his hand. Very exiting morning.

Finally was show time in the Universidad de Costa Rica, the time for the release party. Just walking to the room I spotted some advertisement posted on the walls about the event. It was nice to see Katherine Alfaro again. Just one month before I was speaking on the same University and she steeped forward saying that she wanted to be Fedora Ambassador, and then she applied and organized a release party. I was carrying media, stickers, leaflets, cheat cubes and a roll up banner. But she already had in place a nice decoration and she got some blank media to provide 64bits for those who request it. It was a informal gathering in what is like a student club. There were two computers to demonstrate Fedora and a copying tower for burning media.

We were doing casual talking and later, I was asked to make an informal talk. I covered a bout Fedora Project about a friendly community, the goals of the project, some new features of the latest version. We had a questions and answers session and resume the casual talk. At this point I got more deep questions. I do like informal events, I feel that formal presentation build distance between the collaborators and the public.

After everything was packed, I have some time with Katherine to talk about Ambassadors role and some guidance. Time was short but we make the most of it. I am looking forward to heard what they are going to do next in Costa Rica, and help them if I can.

A mi invitaron a pasar la mañana en la Asamblea Legislativa de Costa Rica. Tenían una presentación sobre software libre para los mandos medios de la Asamblea. En la Asamblea van a migrar a software libre y ellos quieren acabar con los mitos antes que los rumores inicien. Carolina Flores ha estado trabajando en la difusión de software libre de manera exitosa, recientemente presentando a pequeñas empresas. Ella hizo una excelente introducción a software libre para personas no técnicas. Alonzo Castro de la Universidad de Costa Rica dió una charla sobre el proceso de migración de la Universidad. Él explicó muy bien como una migración puede ser un proceso ordenado y consciente, buscando las oportunidades donde el software libre va a brindar los mejores resultados y no empujando áreas donde no vale la pena el esfuerzo. Al final habló Oscar Retana con un ejemplo de implementación de gran escala de software libre en el sector bancario coexistiendo con software propietario muy especifico. Él estaba mostrando que ahora en Costa Rica existen negocios que pueden proveer soporte para instituciones que buscan migrar a software libre. El presidente de la Asamblea Legislativa se presentó para hacer énfasis en la importancia de esta reunión. De casualidad yo estaba de pie ahí, para estrechar su mano. Una mañana muy emocionante.

Finalmente era la hora esperada en la Univeridad de Costa Rica, la hora de la fiesta de lanzamiento. Mientras caminaba al salón vi un cartel de aviso sobre el evento. Fue bonito encontrar a Katherine Alfaro de nuevo. Solamente un mes atrás yo estaba dando una charla en la misma Universidad y ella dio un paso al frente diciendo que quería ser embajadora del proyecto Fedora. Ella aplicó y organizó una fiesta de lanzamiento. Yo iba cargando discos, calcomanías, cubos truqueros, panfletos y un banner. Sin embargo ella ya tenia montada una bonita decoración, y además tenía discos en blanco para quemar discos de 64 bits para quienes los solicitaran. Era una reunión informal en lo que es como un club de estudiantes. Habían dos computadoras para demonstrar Fedora y la torre de duplicar para quemar los discos.

Estuvimos conversando casualmente con los asistentes y luego fui invitado a tomar la palabra. Yo hablé acerca del Proyecto Fedora como una comunidad abierta, los objetivos del proyecto, un poco sobre las nuevas características de la reciente versión. Luego pasamos a una sesión abierta de preguntas y respuestas, .para luego volver a nuestra forma casual de platicas. En se momento recibí preguntas más profundas. Realmente me gustan los eventos informales, me parece que las presentaciones formales crean una distancia entre los colaboradores y el publico.

Luego que todo se empacó, yo tuve algún tiempo con Katherine para hablar sobre el rol de Embajador y brindarle algunos consejos. El tiempo fue corto pero lo aprovechamos al máximo. Yo estoy ansioso de escuchar que es lo siguiente que van a hacer en Costa Rica y ayudarlos si me es posible.

We got very used to connectivity. After a 11 hours bus travel I get to the bus terminal and there is no internet available. I ask for prepaid cards or coins to use the paid phone on the terminal, no luck either. No roaming services available for cellphones, not surprise there. I was thinking that I was facing a long wait when my friend Carolina Flores showed up. It did not took more that five minutes all the questions about payphones, but I seemed longer. We both were happy about our luckily timing.

Our first stop was dropping luggage at the hostel. I have meet the owner in a work shop last month. The workshop was about hotel druid, a free software for hotel management. I was invited as expert in hotel, and expert in free-software. My role was to provide an introduction on managing room availability before the workshop entered on using software. There I meet Shirani, who owns a small hostel called Casa Kibi-Kibi. I really like better small places for lodging, but it is really difficult to asses if it will be good or not just from the internet. The place is really cozy, I really liked my short stay. Shirani recommend us a place near by to eat chifrijo (Chicharrones y Frijoles) which is a mix of pork and beans. It comes with a salad on top, so it has to be a very balanced meal.

The highlight of the night was going to a bar for the presentation of a poetry book titled “Monumentos Ecuestres” which has been released hard copy with creative commons license. Carolina and I were talking about how unique was a book in Costa Rica under Creative Commons when a friend of hers showed another book. This was a writing contest winner and the release was scheduled in a few days. We got a sneak peek before official release of that book. The poetry book presentation was nice, I did like the parts that were read out loud by the writer. We went away when the band started playing as they have terrible sound, overloading the amplifiers distorting the music and voices. Some people prefer volume over quality, but we don’t. In any case I was amazed by the boosting on creative commons that is going on in Costa Rica.

Nosotros nos acostumbramos a estar conectados todo el tiempo. Luego de 11 horas de viaje en bus, entro a la terminal de buses y no hay internet disponible. Yo pregunto por tarjetas pre-pagadas o monedas para usar el teléfono publico, no hay suerte con ninguna. No hay roaming para mi celular, aunque eso no era sorpresa. Yo me estaba preparando para una larga espera cuando mi amiga Carolina Flores apareció. No tomó mas de cinco minutos todas las preguntas sobre los teléfonos públicos, pero pareció mucho más. Ambos estábamos contentos acerca de la afortunada sincronización.

Nuestra primera parada era dejar las maletas en el hostal. Yo había conocido al dueño en un taller de capacitación el mes pasado. El taller era sobre hotel druid, un software libre para administración de hoteles. Yo estaba invitado como experto en hoteles y en software libre. Mi parte era proveer una introducción al manejo de disponibilidad de habitaciones antes de que el taller cubriera usar un software libre. Ahí fue donde conocí a Shirani, quien es dueño de un pequeño hostal llamado  Casa Kibi-Kibi. Yo realmente prefiero lugares pequeños para alojarme, pero es muy difícil evaluar si será un buen destino a traves de internet. El lugar es bien acogedor. Yo realmente disfrute mi corta estancia. Shirani nos recomendó un lugar cerca para comer chifrijo, una mezcla de chicharrones y frijoles. Viene con ensalada encima, así que debe ser un plato bien balanceado.

Lo más notable de la noche fue ir a un bar para la presentación de un libro de poesía titulado  “Monumentos Ecuestres” que estaba siendo lanzado impreso con licencia Creative Commons. Carolina y yo estábamos hablando sobre que único debería ser este libro en Costa Rica bajo Creative Commons cuando un amigo de ella le mostró otro libro. Este era ganador de un concurso literario y su lanzamiento estaba programado en unos días. Nosotros tuvimos una mirada previa al lanzamiento oficial de ese otro libro. La presentación del libro de poesía fue bonita, me gustó las partes que el autor leyó para el público. Nosotros nos fuimos cuando la banda inicio a tocar porque tenían un terrible sonido sobrecargando los amplificadores distorsionando la música y las voces. Algunas personas prefieren volumen sobre calidad, pero nosotros no. En cualquier caso estaba sorprendido por el despegue de Creative Commons en Costa Rica.

Day -2 for Fedora 16 Release Event in San Jose (Costa Rica)

Fedora is not about the swag, but we all know that swag does help making a better event. I have to skip some time from office to do some errants. As I was leaving the country I have to leave all my work stuff ready, not pressure, right?

The design for the roll up banner was not ready until last night courtesy of Aura Lila. I choose a banner from the marketing collateral, but the source were not available. She did all the drawing again. I am leaving a link for other people to use it. So the first stop on my way to work was to stop by the print shop giving them the file, and waiting for them to make sure they can open it correctly. Not as smooth as I wanted, but it worked out. They gave me a sample on the stickers, those were already printed, but they need to cut them. They promised that by the end of the day everything will be ready.

Second task was to look for leaflets. Katherine made a good work, I just made one update on one link. I was supposed to take that to a copy shop, but I printed them on my office. I always have problems with two side printing, but I manage to do it.

Third look for the media. It was not ready. At least I have agreed that if they run into problems with dead line I will need some CD and DVD. They went for it and dropped 50 LiveCD and 50 Install DVD at my office in the afternoon.

As a follow up of the first task, I went back to the print shop at closing time. They have everything ready. Stickers and the roll up banner.

Fourth and last was getting the cheat cubes. I went after dinner to a copy shop were they printed on a tabloid size thin cardboard three cubes, this way I got most from the material with less cardboard wasted. I printed twelve to send some to other ambassadors.

Packaging my backpack was the last thing to do for a early bus ride the following morning.

Fedora no se centra en los regalos, pero todos sabemos que ellos ayudan a hacer un mejor evento. Yo tuve que tomarme un tiempo de la oficina para hacer algunos mandados. Como estaba dejando el país, tenía que dejar mis cosas ede trabajo n orden. Sin presiones, cierto?

El diseño del banner estuvo listo hasta la noche anterior, cortesía de Aura Lila. Yo escogí un banner que estaba en la wiki de elementos de mercadeo, pero la fuente no estaba disponible. Ella realizó todo el dibujo de nuevo. Yo estoy dejando un enlace para que otras personas lo puedan utilizar. Así que mi primera parada fue por la imprenta para darles el archivo, y esperar para estar seguro que podían abrirlo correctamente. No tan fácil como hubiera deseado, pero funcionó. Ellos me dieron una muestra de las calcomanías, esas ya estaban impresas pero aun faltaba cortarlas. Ellos prometieron que para el final del dia todo estaría listo.

La segunda tarea era buscar los panfletos. Katherine realizó un tremendo trabajo, lo único que hice fue actualizar unos enlaces. Yo suponía llevarlos a un centro de copias, pero al final los imprimí en la oficina. Yo siempre he tenido problemas con impresiones a dos caras, pero logre hacerlo.

La tercera cosa es buscar los discos. No estaban listos, pero de antemanos habíamos acordado que si había problemas iba a necesitar algunos CD y algunos DVD. Ellos tomaron esta opción y me entregaron en mi oficina en la tarde 50 LiveCD ay 50 DVD de instalación

Como seguimiento de la priemta tarea, yo fui a la imprenta a la hora de cierre. Ellos tenían todo listo. Las calcomanías y el banner.

Cuarto y último, obtener los cubos truqueros. Yo fui después de cena a un centro de copias donde ellos imprimen en un tabloide de cartulina tres cubos. De esta forma se obtiene el máximo del material con menos desperdicio. Imprimí doce tabloides para enviar algunos a otros embajadores.

Empacar mi mochila era la última cosa por hacer para el viaje muy temprano en bus al día siguiente

SFD 2011 – Managua, Nicaragua

Software Freedom Day is the biggest event for Free Software in Nicaragua. Nicaragua team has been awarded twice as best event world wide (2007 and 2008). There was a great event on 2009, but we did not get honors and sadly in 2010 there was no event. This year we pushed the event to Saturday 24th, as on the week of the regular schedule we have two holidays that most people linked with the weekend to have a 5 day vacation. On this occasion we have a smaller but much richer event. We started with creative commons workshops early on the week, and a screening of creative commons movies for four days in a row, ending the day of the main event.

During the event we have the usual: Talks, workshops, game exhibition, creative commons movie and community tables. But we twisted a bit… talks were shorter and workshop were longer. I had 15 minutes to talk about Free Educational Robotics, a topic that were introduced to me on Fudcon Panama. The new features of the event were: Video recording of the talks, Live recording of the Nicaraguan Free Software Podcast and FOSS Business tables. I gave t-shirts to proudly Fedora user during the recording of the podacst.

My part on this event was mostly to set up Fedora community table. I have a Fedora table cloth, some left over of stickers from previous events, plenty of media, some cheat cubes, plenty of leaflets. We have 95 people signed on our paper registration system (every one requesting media signed our log). We will invite them to the local mailing list for Fedora. We are looking into new opportunities, to visit an university Leon city, and to foster a new user group in a university where there is no free software activities yet. As all active Ambassadors from Nicaragua were present, we talk about the new shinning activities ran by Panama Ambassadors. We wish to run Fedora Activity Day at Nicaragua, focused on translation, documentation and (maybe) packaging.

El Día de la Libertad del Software es el evento más grande para el Software Libre en Nicaragua. El equipo de Nicaragua ha sido premiado como mejor evento a nivel mundial dos veces (2007 y 2008). Hubo un gran evento en 2009, pero no logramos ninguna mensión y tristemente en 2010 no hubo evento. Este año retrazamos el evento para el sábado 24, porque en la semana del calendario regular habian dos feriados que la mayor parte de la gente iban a juntar con el fin de semana en unas vacaciones de cinco días. En esta ocación tuvimos un evento más pequeño pero más rico. Iniciamos con un taller de creative commons al inicio de la semana y una muestra de cine creative commons por cuatro días consecutivos terminando el día del evento principal.

Durante el evento tuvimos lo usaul: Charlas, Talleres, exhibición de juegos, cine creative commons y mesas de la comunidades. Pero lo cambiamos un poco… las charlas fueron más cortas y los talleres más largos. Yo tuve 15 minutos para hablar de robótica educativa libre, un tema que me presentaron en Fudcon Panamá. Lo nuevo del evento fue: grabación de video de las charlas, grabación en vivo del Podcast de Software Libre de Nicaragua y mesas de Negocios FOSS. Yo entregué camisetas a los orgullosos usuarios de Fedora durante la grabación del podcast de software libre.

Mi parte en este evento principalmente fue arreglar la mesa de la comunidad de Fedora. Yo tenía un mantel de Fedora, sobrante de calcomanías de eventos previos, suficientes discos, algunos cubos truqueros, muchos panfletos informativos. Tuvimos 95 personas registradas en nuestro sistema de papel (cada quien solicitando un disco firmo nuestra bitácora). Nosotros vamos a invitarlos a unirse a la lista de correo local de Fedora. Nosotros estamos buscando nuevas oportunidades, como visitar una universidad en la ciudad de León y fomentar un grupo de software libre en una universidad en Managua donde todavía no han habido actividades de Software Libre. Como todos los embajadores activos en NIcaragua estaban presentes, hablamos de las brillantes actividades desarrolladas por los Embajadores de Panamá. Nosotros queremos ejecutar un Dia de Actividades Fedora en Nicaragua, enfocado en traducción, documentación y (talvez) en empaquetamiento.

Primera Muestra de Cine Libre

La jornada del Dia de la Libertad del Software arrancó. Entre las actividades previas al evento principal esta la Primera Muestra de Cine Libre. Ya habiamos tenido oportunidad de presentar Cine Libre, pero no se habia hecho una presentación formal, organizada y extendida por varios días.

Se inicio con Elephant Dreams, un corto animado surrealista. A mi siempre de ha parecido que esta por encima de mi acbeza, pero debo reconocer que la animación, sonido y conceptualización son de primera.

Luego se presentó el documental «The Yes Men Fix The World» donde dos personas se hacen pasar por voceros de diversas intituciones y grandes empresas. Ellos se presentan diciendo lo que ellos piensan es el discurso correcto, poniendo en aprietos a dichas intituciones al ser contrastados contra la realidad. Aunque a veces la realidad es más absurda que sus farsas.

Estas peliculas son licenciadas bajo Creative Commons, asi que es posible descargarlas y compartirlas sin infrigir derechos de autor, puesto que en su licencia explicitamente se estipula esta libertad.

Aun nos quedan un tres días más de muestra…

rpm source rebuild de icaro paso a paso

Icaro es un proyecto de robótica educativa, basado en una placa muy básica de hardware la cual es controlada vía software. Aquí vamos a ver como instalar el software.

En fedoraforum.org por allá de Enero de 2008, leigh123linux me dijo que

«to be honest you appear clueless to the process of rebuilding source rpms so I have written a quick guide for you»

Traducido …Para ser honesto tu pareces despistado en relación al proceso de reconstruir fuentes de rpm, asi que he escrito una guia rápida para ti.

El estaba realmente en lo cierto cuando decia que yo estaba clueless. Su guía me ha servido mucho.

Ahora me enfrento con Icaro y al menos ahora identifico que es un fuente de rpm y debo reconstruirlo, asi que usando la guia que me brindaronhace algun tiempo, aqui pongo como fue que lo hice.

1.- Instalar soporte para compilar software

su
yum groupinstall «Bibliotecas de desarrollo» «Herramientas de desarrollo»
yum install rpmdevtools
exit

Nota: si su sistema esta en ingles deberá usar los grupos «Development Libraries» «Development Tools»

2.- Crear el entorno de trabajo

3.- Conseguir el paquete rpm source y crear el paquete

cd ~/Descargas/
wget http://lletelier.fedorapeople.org/icaro/icaro-0.6.2-1.290311.fc15.src.rpm
rpmbuild –rebuild icaro-0.6.2-1.290311.fc15.src.rpm

Nota: hay que agradecer a Larry Letelier de Chile por crear el rpm source.

4.- Instalar el paquete

cd rpmbuild/RPMS/x86_64/
su
yum install icaro-0.6.2-1.290311.fc15.x86_64.rpm
exit

Nota: ustedes pueden tener sus paquetes en otra rura, por ejemplo sustituyendo x86_64 por i686. MI sistema es de 64 bits.

A final este es solu un paso intermedio de un camino por andar en la robótica educativa. Le agradezco infinitamente a Valentin por haberme incentivado a participar y el apoyo constante que me ha brindado

Epson Stylus Photo T50 en Fedora 15

Tengo una impersora Epson Stylus Photo T50 incluye multiples cartuchos de color

Para mis trabajos normales de impresión en papel desde Fedora, en el pasado yo habia usado un driver que correspondia al modelo R280 o R290, sabiendo que el primero es el modelo vendido en Estados Unidos y el segundo es el modelo que fue reemplazado por la T50 en Latinoamerica.

Al hacer el upgrade a Fedora 15 sencillamente no encuentra el driver y no me permite ponerlo a mano.

Encontre que Avasys Corporation desarrolla drivers de impresoras para Linux y que Epson dice que si usas linux debes ver su sitio web aunque ellos no se responsabilisan.

Con al menos tres sitios que consultar, supongo que es útil poner las cosas en orden para que a alguien más le resulte fácil.

Lo primero es preparar los requisitos de instalación, y las siguientes acciones requiere permiso de administrador.. Estos pasos bienen de las instrucciones de lsb en el sitio web de openprinting. Hay que notar que en el sitio hay un error con el path de los archivos de yum. Aqui en mi sitio ya esta corregido.

Primer paso es: yum install lsb

Segundo paso es crear un archivo en el directorio /etc/yum.repos.d para mi comodidad yo lo nombre openprinting.repo En ese archivo hay que incluir el siguiente texto.

El Tercer paso es descargar el driver de la impresora, en mi caso el driver de T50 en open printing.

El Quinto paso es instalrlo. Cuando ustedes descargan este driver automaticamente fedora les va a preguntar si quieren instalar el paquete. Los más facil es decir que si. Igual ustedes pueden navegar entre sus archivos y hacer un doble click. O bien usar la sugerencia del sitio web de rpm -Uvh por ejemplo:

rpm -Uvh epson-inkjet-printer-stylus-photo-t50-series-1.0.0-1lsb3.2.x86_64.rpm

El Sexto y último paso es conectar la impresoa, será automaticamente detectada y configurada.

Y listo, con esto ahora tengo la impresora funcionando.

En una nota adicional, esta impresora la adquirí porque tiene la opción de una bandeja para imprimir CD y DVD. Estos discos los utilizo para promocionar software libre, especialmente Fedora. Aqui un ejemplo de la impresora en accion.

Aun estoy pendiente de averiguar como imprimir los discos usando Fedora. Pero eso será para otro post.

Chicken or Pizza … what about both?

On June 14th we held a Release Party celebrating newest Fedora 15 Lovelock. This vent was held on Universidad Centromericana at Roberto Teran conference hall.
When yo go to an event as speaker you are contributing some of your time and sharing your experience. But for having such opportunity there is a lot of work done before. Like securing facilities, planing the agenda, contacting people, printing leaflets and posters as invitation, making videos, sideshow, securing equipment for demonstration, physically moving equipment, setting up equipment … sure I am leaving so many thing out. This time at Universidad Centroamericana we have the opportunity of having plenty of people giving a hand, working hard and having fun with event. This time we have two students group working together to make this event happen. I will name alphabetically to avoid any preferences, ANETIC and GUL-UCA. Anetic is an student association for Information and communication technologies, they like free software but they are not exclusively engage in free software. Then we have the GNU/Linux user group of the Universidad Centroamericana. Both groups have gather the best people in System Engineering degree, and they usually help each other when the have events. Now this was a new experience because both group were helping the event, no one group leading and other helping out. The event turn out a success.
Fedora Project was awarding a dinner as a thanks gesture for those people that help out making an release party. Well, there is need for procedures, like registering your event and reporting, taking pictures and so on.
I found funny that people organizing events are really driven and make arrangements quickly, but for getting an agreement on how, when, where this dinner was supposed to be held brought some ups and downs. As the hardest point to agree was on food I suggested that we went to a food court so we can have the best of both worlds: pizza and chicken.
Release Party Team
It was fun to share some leisure time with Aura, Wendy, Enrique, David, Ana, Pablo, Cesar, Katherine and Norlan. We do miss Francys. Last time I said that we need to do things beyond events, where we can talk freely and enjoy each others company. I shall make time for this.

FAmSCo Survey sneak peek

I think that 55 responses is good, but having more responses is better. So I am giving away a sneak peek to let all of you know how this is going and create interest in completing the survey. So far the entries are 73, with 55 completed and 18 pending.

I went to the questionnaire and picked some questions to show a little bit of the data we have gathered.

There are 18 comments, some are about the survey itself, but there are some positives and I would like to share the following.

I have been impressed by the way Fedora encourages people to become involved, and the Ambassadors have been very good for spreading information–especially with the mentor thing.

I have no idea of who wrote that, as there is no way to link response with users. But that is what I like the most about Fedora Project: encourages people to become involved.

Celebrando Lovelock en Managua

Este 14 de Junio, en el Auditorio Roberto Terán de la Universidad Centroamericana a partir de las 1:30pm vamos a realizar el evento de lanzamiento de Fedora 15 – Lovelock.

Como siempre los detalles de los eventos de Software Libre estan disponibles en Linux Tour

Para este evento contamos con el apoyo de la Universidad Centroamericana que esta facilitando el local, y con el apoyo de: GUL-UCA y ANETIC-UCA

Necesitamos ayuda con la divulgación, asi que no dudes en comentar esto con tus amigos. Una forma de divulgarlo es por Facebook, aunque otras redes sociales y servicios de microbloggin tambien son válidos.
