We got very used to connectivity. After a 11 hours bus travel I get to the bus terminal and there is no internet available. I ask for prepaid cards or coins to use the paid phone on the terminal, no luck either. No roaming services available for cellphones, not surprise there. I was thinking that I was facing a long wait when my friend Carolina Flores showed up. It did not took more that five minutes all the questions about payphones, but I seemed longer. We both were happy about our luckily timing.

Our first stop was dropping luggage at the hostel. I have meet the owner in a work shop last month. The workshop was about hotel druid, a free software for hotel management. I was invited as expert in hotel, and expert in free-software. My role was to provide an introduction on managing room availability before the workshop entered on using software. There I meet Shirani, who owns a small hostel called Casa Kibi-Kibi. I really like better small places for lodging, but it is really difficult to asses if it will be good or not just from the internet. The place is really cozy, I really liked my short stay. Shirani recommend us a place near by to eat chifrijo (Chicharrones y Frijoles) which is a mix of pork and beans. It comes with a salad on top, so it has to be a very balanced meal.

The highlight of the night was going to a bar for the presentation of a poetry book titled “Monumentos Ecuestres” which has been released hard copy with creative commons license. Carolina and I were talking about how unique was a book in Costa Rica under Creative Commons when a friend of hers showed another book. This was a writing contest winner and the release was scheduled in a few days. We got a sneak peek before official release of that book. The poetry book presentation was nice, I did like the parts that were read out loud by the writer. We went away when the band started playing as they have terrible sound, overloading the amplifiers distorting the music and voices. Some people prefer volume over quality, but we don’t. In any case I was amazed by the boosting on creative commons that is going on in Costa Rica.

Nosotros nos acostumbramos a estar conectados todo el tiempo. Luego de 11 horas de viaje en bus, entro a la terminal de buses y no hay internet disponible. Yo pregunto por tarjetas pre-pagadas o monedas para usar el teléfono publico, no hay suerte con ninguna. No hay roaming para mi celular, aunque eso no era sorpresa. Yo me estaba preparando para una larga espera cuando mi amiga Carolina Flores apareció. No tomó mas de cinco minutos todas las preguntas sobre los teléfonos públicos, pero pareció mucho más. Ambos estábamos contentos acerca de la afortunada sincronización.

Nuestra primera parada era dejar las maletas en el hostal. Yo había conocido al dueño en un taller de capacitación el mes pasado. El taller era sobre hotel druid, un software libre para administración de hoteles. Yo estaba invitado como experto en hoteles y en software libre. Mi parte era proveer una introducción al manejo de disponibilidad de habitaciones antes de que el taller cubriera usar un software libre. Ahí fue donde conocí a Shirani, quien es dueño de un pequeño hostal llamado  Casa Kibi-Kibi. Yo realmente prefiero lugares pequeños para alojarme, pero es muy difícil evaluar si será un buen destino a traves de internet. El lugar es bien acogedor. Yo realmente disfrute mi corta estancia. Shirani nos recomendó un lugar cerca para comer chifrijo, una mezcla de chicharrones y frijoles. Viene con ensalada encima, así que debe ser un plato bien balanceado.

Lo más notable de la noche fue ir a un bar para la presentación de un libro de poesía titulado  “Monumentos Ecuestres” que estaba siendo lanzado impreso con licencia Creative Commons. Carolina y yo estábamos hablando sobre que único debería ser este libro en Costa Rica bajo Creative Commons cuando un amigo de ella le mostró otro libro. Este era ganador de un concurso literario y su lanzamiento estaba programado en unos días. Nosotros tuvimos una mirada previa al lanzamiento oficial de ese otro libro. La presentación del libro de poesía fue bonita, me gustó las partes que el autor leyó para el público. Nosotros nos fuimos cuando la banda inicio a tocar porque tenían un terrible sonido sobrecargando los amplificadores distorsionando la música y las voces. Algunas personas prefieren volumen sobre calidad, pero nosotros no. En cualquier caso estaba sorprendido por el despegue de Creative Commons en Costa Rica.
